MOUNT OLIVE  – University of Mount Olive freshman Jayla Hicks was named Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Week following a pair of strong two-way performances to close out the nonconference slate and continuing into league play.

A native of Goldsboro, N.C., Hicks played a key role on both ends of the floor in games against Elizabeth City State and Emmanuel (Ga.). Against Elizabeth City State on Dec. 31, Hicks finished with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steals while shooting 6-of-13 from the field.

Hicks followed that effort with another strong defensive showing against Emmanuel on Jan. 3. She totaled seven points, five rebounds, two assists, and four steals, helping set the tone defensively throughout the contest.

The Trojans next game pits them against Chowan on the road on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Murfreesboro.
