BLUEFIELD, WV - In a road trip to Bluefield, W.Va., the University of Mount Olive women's soccer team dominated Bluefield State, 6-1, behind a pair of goals from sophomore defender
Charlotte Benson.
Benson, a two-year member of the Trojan women's soccer team, secured two goals on five shots on goals for her first collegiate scores. UMO players who also scored goals included: Natalia Kaminski, Malia Acevedo, Ana Caldentey, and Tanya Cranholm.
Mia Dixie drew one assist as well.
Outshooting the Big Blue by 31 (37-6), the Trojans capitalized on every opportunity present. The Trojans totaled 37 shots, 19 in the first half and 18 in the second, in a dominant display of offense. The second half is where Mount Olive thrived mostly, scoring four of its six goals in that half alone.
Not only were the Trojans great on offense, they had a stifling defense as well, allowing only one goal and six shots, whilst collecting three saves.
The first score of the game came less than five minutes into the match on a goal by Malia Acevedo. Benson's first goal of the game came next at the 13:42 mark in the first half.
The Big Blue responded with a goal of their own at the 27:37 mark, their only score of the game. Mount Olive goalkeeper Anais Coyne totaled 77:34 minutes in the contest, collecting three saves, while only allowing one goal.
Mazey Mckenchie also played goalie for the Trojans, recording 12:26 minutes of playing time.
At 48:43, Granholm, assisted by Dixie, gave the Trojans a 3-1 lead over the Big Blue.
Benson's second goal of the game came at the 60:43 mark, giving the Trojans a 4-1 lead. The Trojans drew a penalty kick at the 66:22 mark in the second half that allowed Natalia Kaminski to score her goal, giving the Trojans a 5-1 lead.
The final goal of the game came at the 80:08 mark by Caldentey.
The Trojans next contest is against Catawba in Salisbury, N.C. on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. UMO opens at home against USC Aiken on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
