Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Coach Troup Garners First Win as UMO Head Coach

HICKORY - In the final day of the Lenoir-Rhyne Tournament, head coach Kevin Troup garnered his first win at the helm of the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball program behind a 3-1 win over Catawba Saturday evening.

The Trojans also faced the Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday as well, falling to the Bears 3-1.

Against Catawba service aces were key in the win over the Indians. The Trojans totaled 12 service aces: seven were from senior defensive specialist/libero Caroline Sheaffer. Trojans that also recorded a service ace included Breanna Tanton (2), Rachel Clark (1), Lindsay Reid (1), and Kacey Gore (1).

The Trojans took set three after a big collective effort from Olivia Melvin, Tanton, Sheaffer, Rachel Clark, and Ruby Engert.

The Indians led 23-22 over the Trojans, but the lead didn't last long as a kill by Melvin from Tanton tied the match, 23-23.

Sheaffer's service ace gave UMO the lead, before blocks by Clark and Engert gave the Trojans the 25-23 third set win.

With that momentum going into the fourth set, the Trojans went on a 4-0 run at the 21-19 mark to take the set easily, 25-19.

Gore's first collegiate double-double came in the win, posting 14 digs and 10 assists. Melvin and Ruby Engert led the Trojans in kills, collecting 10 a piece.

Melvin tied her career high after a 17-kill, 10-dig double-double performance against LR in the first game on the day. Melvin, joined by Breanna Reisinger and Clark, each secured 10 or more kills.

Not only did they each tally 10-plus kills, they all recorded over .200 hitting percentage: Melvin (.231, 17K, 8E), Clark (.474, 11K, 2E), and Reisinger (.294, 14K, 4E).

The Trojans' third set win occurred on a 7-2 run, starting at the 24-21 mark. Reisinger secured back-to-back kills to bring the Trojans within one point. A Bear attacking error tied it at 24-points a piece in the match.

Ashlyn Haynie and Lydnsay Reid tallied clutch kills that allowed the Trojans to take a 27-26 match-point lead. For the win, Melvin and Clark tallied a huge block on Bear's Emmie Modlin.

Sheaffer totaled 18 digs and three service aces and Tanton collected 24 assists against the Bears.
