MOUNT OLIVE (April 8) – On Senior Day, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team competed against Barton at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon and won by a 4-3 margin.
With the win, the Trojans improve to 8-6 overall with a 6-1 mark in Conference Carolinas play after improving their winning streak to five in a row. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs drop to 8-9 overall with a 5-2 mark in league play.
The Bulldogs earned the doubles point, winning in all three doubles sessions. In the first slot, freshman of the month
Nina Bernier and sophomore
Simone Szovan registered a loss by a score of 1-6 against Tilde Howeler and Irma Granstam. In the second position, the sophomore duo
Lara Stamereilers and
Victoria Calle fell by a 4-6 margin versus Silvia Fernandez and Alexandra Saez. Senior
Sandra Riecken and junior
Alina Esser were downed in the third doubles with a score of 4-6 against Ruya Mavi and Leonie Hellum-Lilleengen.
In singles play, the Trojans rallied, winning four of the six matches. In the first slot, Stamereilers collected an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory over Tilde Howeler. Afterward, Szovan, in the second position, fell by a close 2-6, 7-5, 4-6 against Fernandez before, in the third slot, freshman
Claudia Cerdan lost 1-6, 5-7 to Mavi. In the fourth position, Calle won a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 contest versus Granstam before Bernier posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Saez at No. 5 singles. In the sixth singles, freshman
Julie Jagiella closed out singles play with a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2 win over Claudia Zaratiegui Marquez to clinch the victory for the Trojans.
Mount Olive welcomes North Carolina Central, a Division I opponent, to play a non-conference matchup on Sunday, April 13, with the time to be announced.
