Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Chowan 6-1

MURFREESBORO — The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over Chowan in a Conference Carolinas matchup on Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans put together a strong all-around performance, using a solid showing in doubles play before taking control in singles to secure the road win.

Mount Olive claimed the doubles point by winning two of three matches. Nina Bernier and Simone Szovan led the way at No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 victory over Marcia Aragon and Janna Lerma. Victoria Calle and Alina Esser followed with a dominant 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Chowan picked up its lone doubles victory at the No. 3 position.

In singles action, the Trojans won five of six matches to pull away. Szovan set the tone at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win, while Bernier added a strong 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 3.

Julia Jagiella controlled her match at No. 4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-4, and Esser battled back for a three-set victory at No. 5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Courtney Howell closed out the scoring at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) win in a match tiebreak.

The Trojans return to action Friday, traveling to Wilson for a Conference Carolinas matchup against Barton. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
