MOUNT OLIVE (Apr. 4) – Despite losing the doubles point on Friday afternoon, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team collected another 5-2 victory against Emmanuel in conference play at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
With the win, the Trojans improve to a positive 7-6 record for the first time this season with a 5-1 conference record. Mount Olive has improved their head-to-head comparison to Emmanuel to 8-4. Meanwhile, the Lions drop to 2-11 overall while falling 0-4 in league action.
In the double session, Emmanuel won the point after sweeping two out of three matches. In the first position, sophomore
Simone Szovan and freshman
Nina Bernier fell by a close 5-7 margin against Shatavisa Ghosh and Franziska Wolter, while the sophomore duo
Lara Stamereilers and
Victoria Calle were downed by a 4-6 margin in second doubles by Tawana Senah and Anna Goncalves. In the third slot, junior
Alina Esser and senior
Sandra Riecken collected a win by default.
The Trojans took the 5-2 victory after claiming four of the possible six singles contests. In the first singles, Stamereilers collected a two-set win by a score of 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) against Ghosh, while freshman
Claudia Cerdan was downed by a 4-6, 2-6 margin by Senah in the second position. Szovan also registered a win by a 6-2, 6-2 margin versus Goncalves in the third slot, while Calle took a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Wolter at the fourth singles. Bernier produced a fast straight-set victory over Emma Auger in the fifth slot by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Freshman
Julie Jagiella registered another win by default.
The Trojans continue Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday, April 8, when they welcome rival Barton for Senior Day at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
