Men's Tennis conquers Lees-McRae, 4-3

BANNER ELK, N.C. (April 18) – In the final weekend of the regular season, the Trojans secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory at Lees-McRae on Friday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action while competing at the C.D. Chesley Tennis Courts.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive men's tennis program improves to 9-9 this season with a 6-2 mark in conference play. The Trojans will close out Conference Carolinas action on Saturday, April 19, at King with the match time set for 1 p.m. Meanwhile, Lees-McRae falls to 11-8 overall with a 4-5 record in league play.

The Trojans captured the doubles point to begin the contest after winning two of the three matches.  Junior Philip Peter Carstensen and sophomore Kristoffer Dalbak secured a 6-4 win in the first position over Ezequiel Arce and Isaac Yang. Juniors Niklas Gruenefeldt and Bram Poel fell short by a 6-7 (7-9) margin in the second doubles to Max Borisov and Tenzin Dorji, but UMO responded in the third slot as freshmen Joao Matias Sonaglia and Luke Oosthuizen posted a 7-5 victory against Andrew Kunaka and Andy Tallafigo.

In the singles session, Mount Olive claims three of the six matches to seal the 4-3 league win. Dalbak fell in straight sets 3-6, 0-6 to nationally-ranked No. 68 Borisov in the first singles before Gruenefeldt dropped a 1-6, 3-6 decision versus Yang in the second position. Poel battled to a 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory against Kunaka in the third slot, but Carstensen fell in an intense three-set loss 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (3-7) in the fourth singles versus Arce. In the fifth position, sophomore Hampus Hagglund earned a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Tallafigo, while Sonaglia defeated Dorji 2-6, 6-7 (6-8) in the sixth slot.

The Trojans close the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, April 18, at King in Conference Carolinas action at 1 p.m.
