Mount Olive secures regular season championship outright

MOUNT OLIVE (March 29) - Another near-perfect afternoon for Mount Olive as it took down the Flying Fleet for the second time this season via a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-14) match victory. The efforts propelled the program to its fifth outright regular-season championship in program history and its first since 2021.

With the win, the Trojans extended their win streak to 16 matches while they moved to 18-2 on the season and 13-0 in conference action. With the No. 1 seed racked up and only two games left in the regular season, UMO has only lost two sets in the entirety of its winning streak. Meanwhile, Erskine falls to 8-14 on the season and 4-8 in league play.

Sophomore Christos Savvidis was on the money Saturday afternoon as he collected eight kills on a .294 clip while collecting six digs and an assist. Junior Kory Grant continued his strong form as he also had eight kills, three blocks, and two digs. Senior Holden Maryott was a human highlight reel on the afternoon as he tormented the Erskine front line with seven kills and four blocks. Junior setter Jackson Lahey finished with 25 assists, three digs, and two blocks.

Freshman libero Luca Colombo entered his third consecutive double-digit dig game in a row as he finished with 10.

The opening set was a tussle from front to back as the two sides exchanged runs but met up again at 10-10. After this tie, which was 1-of-11 in the first set, the battle continued as the Trojans were locked again at 19-19. Fortunately, Mount Olive would use a massive four-point run to cap the set 25-20.

The second set was much more comfortable for the Trojan offense as they found their footing. Mount Olive quickly went up 11-6 and did not look back. The Trojans mounted a trio of four-point runs in the set to cruise to a 25-17 set win and put them in a prime position for their 15th sweep of the season.

The third set saw exactly that happen as it was the shortest of the three as UMO worked to an early 14-7 lead. The Flying Fleet would struggle with their attacks the rest of the way in the set. The Trojans would eventually take it 25-14.

The Trojans are set to host an exciting non-conference match next weekend on Saturday, April 5, against LMU at 2 p.m.
