ETTRICK, Va. (March 25) – After collecting the doubles point and four singles matches, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program secured a 5-2 win against Virginia State on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.
With the win, the Trojans improve to 4-6 this season behind a 1-1 record on the road. The two teams met for the first time in program history, as Mount Olive moved to 1-0 in head-to-head comparison. Meanwhile, the Virginia State Trojans drop to 4-5 overall while going 4-3 at home.
In the doubles session, junior
Alina Esser and senior
Sandra Riecken dealt with a close 5-7 loss in the first position versus Ashleigh Charles and Damita Bollers. In the second doubles, the freshman duo of
Julie Jagiella and
Claudia Cerdan registered a fast 6-0 win over Ginger Johnson and Alexcie Burrows, while freshman
Nina Bernier and sophomore
Courtney Howell posted a 6-1 victory in the third slot against Makensie Pago and Geena Williams.
Mount Olive collected four of six matches on Tuesday afternoon to seal the 5-2 victory against the Virginia State Trojans. In the first singles, Cerdan dropped a close three-set 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 0-1 (4-10) match loss to Johnson before Bernier collected a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Pago in the second singles. In the third position, Jagiella won by 6-2, 6-0 margin versus Charles before Esser won with straight sets over Bollers by a score of 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles. In the fifth slot, Riecken dropped another match by a 4-6, 0-6 margin against Burrows, while Howell won by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Mount Olive returns to the court on Friday, March 28, for a conference match against North Greenville in Tigerville, South Carolina, at 1 p.m.
