MOUNT OLIVE (Mar. 2) – The University of Mount Olive men's tennis program completed a perfect weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference play at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
With the win, the Trojans claimed back-to-back victories to improve to 2-3 overall while holding a 2-0 record at home this season. The two sides met for a third straight year with the Trojans moving a 3-1 all-time in the series. Meanwhile, the Bobcats suffered their third loss of the season to drop to 2-3 overall.
Mount Olive captured the doubles point on Sunday after winning two of the three matches. In the first position, sophomore
Kristoffer Dalbak and junior
Philip Peter Carstensen achieved a narrow 6-4 win over Jed Platts and Nicola Bottelberghs. Juniors
Niklas Gruenefeldt and
Bram Poel delivered a 6-0 win in the second slot over Ricardo Starosta and Mathis Blary, while the freshman duo
Joao Matias Sonaglia and
Luke Oosthuizen suffered a 3-6 loss at third doubles against Mika Kreisel and Takuya Kobayashi.
In the singles session, the Trojans registered wins in four of six possible matches against the Bobcats. In the first position, Dalbak posted a 7-5, 6-2 win versus Kobayashi before Gruenefeldt followed with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 straight sets victory against Kreisel at second singles. In the third slot, Matias Sonaglia was downed 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 by Starosta, while Oosthuizen won in three sets by a score of 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 versus Bottelberghs at the fourth position. The freshman
Hiroma Nishikata won by a tight 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) margin in the fifth slot against Blary, while freshman
Viggo Lindstrup fell by a 4-6, 3-6 margin to Platts.
Mount Olive is returning to the court in a week on Sunday, March 9, for three consecutive matches against Flagler, Rollins, and Embry-Riddle in Florida.
