Mount Olive secures win over Coker, 6-1

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. (March 1) – In a Southeast Region non-conference matchup, the University of Mount Olive men's tennis program delivered a 6-1 victory over Coker on Saturday afternoon at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 1-3 this season while competing in their first home match of the season. Head coach Julieta Boerr earns her first win at the helm of the men's program after being hired in Nov. 2024. Meanwhile, the Cobras drop to a 2-5 overall season with a 1-2 record against Conference Carolinas opponents. 

Mount Olive claimed the double point after securing wins in all three matches on Saturday. Junior Philip Peter Carstensen and sophomore Kristoffer Dalbak registered a 6-3 win over Andy Huynh and Tom Lamers in the first slot. Juniors Niklas Gruenefeldt and Bram Poel defeated Benedikt Wittmann and Samuel Winter by a 6-3 margin in the second doubles, while sophomore Hampus Hagglund and freshman Viggo Lindstrup scored a 6-4 win against Gijs van Asdonck and Joao Pugliese in the third position.

The Trojans won the match after taking five of the six singles matches in the session. Dalbak rallied in the first singles to earn a 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over Lamers before Gruenefeldt won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to Sharif Vossen in the second slot. In the third position, Poel responded with a three-set win 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 versus Winter before Hagglund captured a fast 6-0, 6-2 win over Wittmann in the fourth singles. Carstensen recorded a close 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) victory versus Huynh in the fifth position, while freshman Hiroma Nishikata battled in a close 7-6, 2-6, 0-1 (9-11) loss in the sixth slot against van Asdonck.

Mount Olive continues back-to-back non-conference play tomorrow Sunday, March 2, when it welcomes West Virginia Wesleyan with the start time set for 1 p.m.
