UMO takes the win over Chowan in league opener, 7-0

MOUNT OLIVE (March 14) – In the conference opener on Friday afternoon, the Trojans took the 7-0 victory over Chowan at home in Conference Carolinas action while playing at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team improves to 2-4 overall behind a 1-0 mark in conference play. It marks the second straight win for the Trojans, after defeating West Virginia Wesleyan 5-2. Meanwhile, Chowan drops to 1-5 this season with a 0-1 record in league action.

In the doubles session, the Trojans swept two out of three matches. Sophomore Simone Szovan and freshman Nina Bernier battled to a fast 6-1 win in the first doubles over Aime Vera and Selene Kentish. In the second slot, the sophomore duo of Lara Stamereilers and Victoria Calle secured a 6-3 win versus Sreshta Puducheri and Olivia Schoone. In the third slot, senior Sandra Riecken and junior Alina Esser fell with a 4-6 margin against Feidi Abreu Rodriguez and Isabella Turner.

UMO made short work of the Hawks in the singles portion of the contest after claiming all six matches. Stamereilers earned the victory in the first position by a score of 6-4, 6-0 over Abreu Rodriguez, after coming back from 1-4 in the first set, winning 11 games in a row. Freshman Claudia Cerdan posted a straight sets win against Vera by a 6-2, 6-4 margin in the second singles. Szovan continued the success with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 victory in the third slot versus Puducheri. Calle played in the fourth position and secured the only three-set victory with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 score while facing Kentish. Bernier picked up an easy 6-0, 6-1 win in the fifth slot over Schoone, while freshman Julie Jagiella collected a fast win by a 6-0,6-0 margin in the sixth singles over Turner.

Mount Olive will quickly turnaround to play Shorter tomorrow, Saturday, March 15, in a second Conference Carolinas match, starting at 2 p.m. at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
