Trojans drop match at No. 2 Flagler, 6-1

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL. (Mar. 12) – In their final spring break match in the Sunshine State, the Trojans fell by a 6-1 margin at No. 2 nationally ranked Flagler on Wednesday morning in non-conference play.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive men's tennis drops to 2-6 overall after losing all three matches on the road in Florida against nationally ranked programs. It marks the second meeting between the sides after facing off in the opening match of the NCAA Southeast Regional last year. Meanwhile, Flagler improves to 7-1 this season to extend its winning streak to six in a row.

The Trojans lost the doubles point after losing the second and third positions on Wednesday. Junior Philip Peter Carstensen and sophomore Kristoffer Dalbak could not finish and ended their match at 5-6 in first doubles against Makary Adamek and Filip Kana. At the second slot, juniors Bram Poel and Niklas Gruenefeldt dropped a 6-1 match versus Ilian Borlee and Simon Malis, while the freshmen Luke Oosthuizen and Joao Matias Sonaglia battled in a 2-6 loss in the third position against Baptiste Mercier and Aly El Rafie.

The Lions completed the match victory by winning five out of six singles matches, including all five in straight sets. Dalbak suffered a 5-7, 1-6 loss at first singles to Mercier before Gruenefeldt dropped a 2-6, 1-6 decision against Malis in the second slot. Poel won the only singles point for the Trojans by a 7-5, 6-4 count at the third position against Borlee, while sophomore Hampus Hagglund was dealt a 1-6, 1-6 loss by Adamek at fourth singles. Carstensen suffered a 1-6, 1-6 defeat against Kana in the fifth slot. In the sixth position, sophomore Kody Baker closed out singles play with a 1-6, 2-6 loss to El Rafie.

Mount Olive returns to the court on Friday, March 14, when it hosts Chowan for the first conference match at John Neal Walker Tennis Center, starting at 2 p.m.
