MOUNT OLIVE (March 14) – In the opening match of Conference Carolinas action, the Trojans collected their first win after their three losses against nationally ranked teams on the road with a 7-0 victory over Chowan while competing at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center on Friday.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive men's tennis team secured its third win to improve to 3-6 this season with a 1-0 mark in league play. The Trojans have won the last 12 meetings in the series dating back to 2011. Meanwhile, Chowan falls to 0-4 overall behind a 0-1 record in conference action.
Mount Olive quickly grabbed the doubles point after sweeping all three matches on Friday afternoon. In the first position, junior
Philip Peter Carstensen and sophomore
Kristoffer Dalbak produced a 6-3 win over Marcel Ungerboeck and Tadeo Missan, while the juniors
Niklas Gruenefeldt and
Bram Poel earned a 6-1 victory in second doubles versus Egor Pishchelev and Thales Sette. In the third slot, the freshman duo
Joao Matias Sonaglia and
Luke Oosthuizen delivered a 6-4 win against Maksim Kachuk and Tadeo Sanchez.
In the singles session, the Trojans captured all six matches to secure a 7-0 win in the conference opener. Dalbak posted a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the first position over Ungerboeck while Gruenefeldt earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pishchelev in second singles. Poel delivered a win in straight sets over Sette by a 6-2, 6-1 margin in the third slot and Carstensen followed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Missan. Sophomore
Hampus Hagglund registered a fast 6-1, 6-2 win in the fifth position versus Kachuk, while the freshman
Hiroma Nishikata won in the sixth singles with a final score of 6-2, 6-2 against Sanchez.
The Trojans will return for a back-to-back conference match, hosting Shorter on Saturday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
