Career Defensive Performances Power Trojans Past Rival Barton

MOUNT OLIVE Sophomore libero Kacey Gore recorded a career-high 30 digs, while junior middle blocker Rachel Clark posted a career-best nine blocks, leading Mount Olive to a 3-1 win over rival Barton on Wednesday night.

The Trojans improved to 6-11 overall and 4-5 in Conference Carolinas play, sitting second in the East Division. Barton dropped to 5-11 overall and 2-7 in league play.

Gore anchored a strong defensive effort with support from four teammates who reached double-digit digs — Caroline Sheaffer and Lyndsay Reid (12 each) and Kaitlyn Landis (11).

Clark, the team's blocking leader, has tallied block assists in every match this season. Wednesday marked her third contest with four or more block assists. Olivia Melvin added five blocks, while Breanna Reisinger, Landis, and Danielle Parker each had two.

Mount Olive dominated the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-16. The Trojans hit .297 in the opening frame, fueled by an 11-4 run that featured two service aces and two assists from Reid and kills from Parker, Landis, Melvin, and Haynie.

An 8-0 run in the second set, highlighted by three Landis aces and strong blocking from Landis and Parker, secured another decisive win.

Barton responded in set three, jumping out to a 14-8 lead and holding off a late Trojan rally to win 25-22.

Mount Olive regained control in the fourth, building an eight-point advantage and never looking back.

Landis and Melvin combined for 22 kills, while Reid and Breanna Tanton totaled 28 assists. Both Landis (12 kills, 11 digs) and Reid (19 assists, 12 digs) recorded double-doubles.

The Trojans hit the road next to face North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C.
