MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Young Harris in Conference Carolinas play Saturday afternoon at Kornegay Arena.

The Trojans sit at 5-11 overall, 3-5 in league play, while the Mountain Lions improved to 5-11, 2-6 in conference.

Both teams came out energized in the opening sets.

In set one, the Trojans used a 10-4 run to grab a 17-15 lead behind kills from Olivia Melvin, Danielle Parker, and Ashlyn Haynie, plus a service ace by Kacey Gore and block assists from Rachel Clark and Melvin. Young Harris answered with key blocks and kills to close out a 25-20 win.

The Mountain Lions jumped ahead 9-3 in set two, but Mount Olive responded. A kill from Kaitlyn Landis sparked a 10-2 run, with setter Lyndsay Reid spreading the ball to four different attackers for a 13-11 lead. With contributions from Landis and Melvin, the Trojans extended the edge to 23-20 and closed the set with a Young Harris service error, a Melvin kill, and a Breanna Tanton ace for a 25-21 win.

Young Harris controlled the final two sets, winning 25-14 and 25-16 to seal the match.

Melvin paced the Trojans with 10 kills, three block assists, and two digs. Reid (20) and Tanton (17) combined for 37 assists, while Caroline Sheaffer (14) and Landis (11) each finished with double-digit digs.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday at 6 p.m., hosting rival Barton at Kornegay Arena.
