MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team delivered a strong all-around performance in a 3-1 home win over Chowan on Tuesday night.
The victory moves the Trojans to 8-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play, while the Hawks drop to 4-15 overall and 3-8 in league action. The win marks Mount Olive's second straight at Kornegay Arena.
Mount Olive dominated at the net with a season-high 12 total blocks, all coming from 18 block assists.
Rachel Clark led with seven block assists and two solo blocks, followed by
Olivia Melvin (4),
Danielle Parker (2), and
Ashlyn Haynie (2). The Trojans held Chowan to just a .074 hitting percentage, their second-lowest mark allowed this season.
Offensively, Mount Olive recorded its second-best hitting performance of the year, finishing with a .251 percentage on 50 kills, 12 errors, and 142 attempts. Melvin led the attack with 13 kills.
Kaitlyn Landis added 16 digs, while
Kacey Gore posted 22. Setters
Lyndsay Reid (19 assists) and
Breanna Tanton (22 assists) guided the balanced offense.
Several Trojans added eight or more kills: Landis and Haynie (8 each), and Reisinger and Clark (9 each).
Mount Olive set the tone early with an 11-0 run in the opening set, cruising to a 25-11 win. Reisinger and Haynie each tallied a kill during the surge, while Gore delivered two service aces.
Chowan answered in set two, edging Mount Olive 25-23 despite a late rally from the Trojans.
The Trojans regained control in set three with a 21-13 lead behind a Reisinger kill and closed it out 25-18. In the fourth, Mount Olive erased an early deficit and took command down the stretch to seal the 25-21 victory.
Mount Olive returns to action Friday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 5 p.m.
