Sheaffer Reaches Career Milestone in Trojans’ 3-2 Win Over UNC Pembroke

MOUNT OLIVE – Senior defensive specialist/libero Caroline Sheaffer surpassed 1,000 career digs as the University of Mount Olive volleyball team completed a 3-2 reverse sweep over UNC Pembroke Friday night.

Sheaffer totaled 16 digs, raising her career mark to 1,001. She was joined defensively by Kacey Gore (25 digs), Breanna Tanton (17), Lyndsay Reid (14), and Kaitlyn Landis (12).

With the win, the Trojans improved to 9-12 overall and 7-6 in conference play, earning their second straight home victory. UNC Pembroke fell to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in league play.

The Braves opened strong in the first set, leading by as many as six. Mount Olive responded with a 5-0 run sparked by kills from Ashlyn Haynie and Olivia Melvin, plus a service ace from Tanton, narrowing the gap to 21-20. Despite the surge, the Braves claimed the set 25-23 after back-to-back Trojan errors.

Mount Olive bounced back in set two with a dominant 25-14 win, leading by as many as eight and controlling long rallies to even the match.

UNC Pembroke grabbed a 15-10 lead in set three, but the Trojans answered with a 7-3 run behind kills from Landis, Haynie, and Reisinger, closing the gap to 18-16. The Braves held on late for a 25-23 win, despite a late Trojan push.

Determined to extend the match, the Trojans battled through a back-and-forth fourth set. Melvin and Landis powered the offense, helping Mount Olive edge out a 25-23 victory to force a decisive fifth.


Sheaffer opened the fifth set with the serve, sparking an early rally that cut a 4-0 deficit to 6-5. After falling behind 9-5, kills from Landis and Danielle Parker narrowed the margin again. Down 12-11, the Trojans closed with a 4-0 run fueled by a Haynie kill, a Braves error, and back-to-back UMO blocks to seal a 15-12 win.

Mount Olive recorded a season-high 64 kills, surpassing its previous mark of 63. Melvin led with a career-high 19 kills, while Haynie and Landis each added 13.

Clark led the blocking effort with five, followed by Parker (3), and Haynie and Melvin (2 each).

Four Trojans posted double-doubles:
  • Reid: 21 assists, 14 digs
  • Tanton: 28 assists, 17 digs
  • Gore: 11 assists, 25 digs
  • Landis: 13 kills, 12 digs
The Trojans travel to Florence, S.C., tomorrow to face Francis Marion at 1 p.m.
