Trojans’ Late Rally Falls Short in 3-2 Road Loss to Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team showed grit and determination but came up short in a 3-2 road loss to Southern Wesleyan on Saturday.

The Trojans fell to 7-12 overall and 5-6 in league play, while the Warriors improved to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in conference.

Mount Olive dropped the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-22, despite a late four-point surge in the opener led by kills from Kaitlyn Landis and Breanna Reisinger, plus blocks from Olivia Melvin and Rachel Clark.

In set two, the Trojans battled back from a six-point deficit with a 6-1 run to tie it at 22, but the Warriors closed out the frame 25-22 to go up 2-0.

Mount Olive dominated the next two sets, keeping Southern Wesleyan under 20 points in both. A 9-0 run fueled a 25-16 third-set win, and the Trojans carried that momentum into the fourth. Tied at 18, Lyndsay Reid delivered two aces in a 7-1 closing run as Mount Olive claimed the set 25-19 to force a fifth.

The Warriors jumped ahead early in the deciding set and held off the Trojans' push for a 15-10 victory.

Landis led all players with 18 kills and hit .273. Reid posted a double-double with 17 assists and 12 digs, while Tanton added 23 assists. Caroline Sheaffer (13) and Kacey Gore (18) also reached double figures in digs.

Mount Olive returns home Tuesday to face Chowan at 6 p.m., then hosts UNC Pembroke on Friday at 5 p.m.
