SUMTER, S.C. (Sept. 29) – Sophomore
Kristoffer Dalbak reached the round of 32 in singles play, as the University of Mount Olive men's tennis program competed at the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships over the weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.
Mount Olive featured three doubles pairings at the event in the 48-team field, while also having five individuals participate in singles with nearly 100 players in the tournament.
In singles competition, Dalbak posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the opening round over Connor Donley of Lenoir-Rhyne before upsetting the No. 9 seed Martin Barbera of Francis Marion by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. In the round of the 32 on Sunday, he suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to No. 17 Luka Brown of Wingate.
Junior
Bram Poel delivered a 3-1 record at the regional event, recording a first-round win against Tom Lamers of Coker by a final score of 7-6, 6-3. He fell in the round of 64 to No. 17 seed Mateo Berne of Catawba by a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 margin decision. In the consolation bracket, Poel produced a 6-2, 6-3 victory versus Charlie Fremaux of Belmont Abbey before defeating Leopold Morel of Converse by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Fellow junior
Niklas Gruenefeldt registered an opening-round win over Gregor Gottein of Young Harris by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 margin. He fell in the next round 6-2, 6-2 to No. 5 seed Simon Malis of Flagler and dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Arthur Valette of Augusta in the consolation bracket.
Sophomore
Hampus Hagglund recorded a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory in the first round versus Daniel Adelino Lopez of Barton. He ultimately fell in the following match to No. 9 Enzo Bordini Garutti of Augusta in a three-set loss 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 and exited the event due to injury in a consolation match.
Junior
Philip Peter Carstensen suffered a 6-3, 6-2 loss in the opening round to Sebastian Zabala of Catawba.
In doubles play, Dalbak and Carstensen posted an 8-5 win in the round of 64 before battling in an 8-6 loss to Marcos Castares and Mateo Berne of Catawba.
Gruenefeldt and Poel earned the No. 9 seed and a first-round bye at the regional competition. In the round of 32, the tandem suffered an 8-4 loss against Paul Gayk and Marnix Van Dalen of Carson-Newman.
Junior
Oliver Winterhagen and Hagglund dropped the first-round match to Tom Lamers and Babedikt Wittmann of Coker by a score of 8-5.
Mount Olive returns to the court on Saturday, Oct. 19 to face Charleston in a dual match.
