UMO captures victory over NGU, 5-2

MOUNT OLIVE (April 6) – The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team delivered a 5-2 victory on Saturday morning against North Greenville in Conference Carolinas action at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 6-8 this season behind a 3-2 record in conference play. Mount Olive captured its sixth consecutive win over North Greenville since 2017 and currently sits in a three-way tie for fifth place in the league standings. Meanwhile, the Crusaders drop to 2-12 this season with a 1-4 record in conference action.

Mount Olive claimed the doubles point on Saturday after winning two of the three matches. Senior Jessica Aylward and freshman Simone Szovan dropped a 2-6 decision in the first slot while facing Grace Katzman and Kyla Steyn. In the second position, freshmen Victoria Calle and Valeria Guerrero posted a 6-4 win over Vitoria Maximiliano and Abigail Watson, while freshman Lara Stamereilers and sophomore Alina Esser registered a 6-2 victory in the third doubles versus Naomi Sakakibara and Ashlen Chapman.

In the singles session, the Trojans secured four of the possible six matches to capture a 5-2 win over the Crusaders. Stamereilers won in straight sets by a 6-1, 6-4 margin against Watson in the first position, but Guerrero suffered a 1-6, 4-6 loss in the second singles to Katzman. In the third slot, Calle fell by a final score of 4-6, 4-6 versus Maximiliano in the third slot before Svozan answered back with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Sakakibara in the fourth position. Freshman Sara Gajbhiye delivered a straight sets win by a score of 6-3, 6-4 against Steyn in the fifth singles, while Esser posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Chapman in the sixth slot.

The Trojans are idle for nearly a week before returning to action on Friday, April 12, to face King at 1 p.m.
