No. 18 UMO falls short at Barton, 4-3

WILSON, N.C. (April 5) – In a matchup featuring a pair of teams undefeated in league play, the No. 18 ranked University of Mount Olive men's tennis team fell short by a 4-3 margin at Barton on Friday afternoon in Conference Carolinas play.

With the loss, the Trojans saw their 10-match winning streak snapped and drop to 10-2 this season behind a 2-1 mark in conference action. The match also served as a homecoming for Head Coach Jake McCartney, who played collegiately at Barton and was a three-time all-conference selection. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs improve to 6-6 overall with a 4-0 record in league play.

 In the doubles portion, the Bulldogs secured the point after winning two of the three matches on Friday afternoon. Senior Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman Kristoffer Dalbak fell by a 2-6 margin in the first position against Wilhelm Karlsson and Johan Holgersson. In the second doubles, sophomore Niklas Gruenefeldt and senior Adam Ibrahim battled in a 5-7 loss to Guillem Busquets Brau and Hannes Tylehed. In the third slot, freshman Lenn Hoffmann and sophomore Bram Poel secured a 6-0 victory versus Felipe Mioch and Brad Beck.

Mount Olive rallied in the single session, but Barton managed to split the six singles matches to escape with the 4-3 win. In the first position, de Oliveira posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Mioch while Gruenefeldt suffered a 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 loss against Tylehed in the second slot. Dalback registered a quick 6-2, 6-1 victory over Aditya Chauhan in the third singles. In the deciding match, Poel dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 decision to Busquets Brau in the fourth position. Sophomore Kabir Chhabria delivered a 7-5, 6-2 win over Deni Furtado-Brienic in the fifth spot before Ibrahim fell by a 6-2, 2-6, 2-6 margin to Holgersson in the sixth singles.

Mount Olive returns to the court tomorrow, Saturday, April 6, for a league match against North Greenville at 10 a.m.
