MOUNT OLIVE (March 26) – In a tightly contested battle on Tuesday afternoon, the Trojans picked up a critical 4-3 victory over Francis Marion in Conference Carolinas action at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team improves to 5-6 overall behind a 2-1 record in conference play. The Trojans earned their sixth straight win over the Patriots with four of those matches decided by a final score of 4-3. Meanwhile, Francis Marion drops to 4-6 this season with a 0-2 mark in league action.
In the doubles session, the Trojans swept all three matches to claim the doubles point. In the first position, freshman
Valeria Guerrero and senior
Jessica Aylward secured a 6-2 decision over Gabriel Karatantcheva and Kim Venghaus. Freshmen
Simone Szovan and
Victoria Calle produced a 6-1 win against Chelsea Seidewitz and Polina Gontaryk in the second position, while sophomore
Alina Esser and freshman
Lara Stamereilers delivered a 6-4 victory at third doubles versus Julie Martincova and Julia B. F. Pinto.
Mount Olive captured three of the six singles matches to secure a 4-3 victory over the Patriots on Tuesday. Stamereilers rallied to defeat Karatantcheva in the first slot by a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 margin before Guerrero suffered a 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 loss to Seidewitz in the second singles. Calle battled to a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Martincova in the third position, but Szovan fell by a 2-6, 5-7 margin to Gontaryk in the fourth slot. At fifth singles, freshman
Sara Gajbhiye rallied to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Venghaus, while Aylward dropped a 6-7 (4-7), 1-6 decision against Sophia Hansen.
