Dylan Jeffries delivered multi-RBI performances, as the University of Mount Olive baseball program secured a 5-2 victory at Wingate on Tuesday in non-conference action.
With the win, the Trojans earn their seventh consecutive win and improve to 21-8 this season with a 10-4 mark on the road. Mount Olive has won two of the previous three meetings in the series and collects its first win at Ron Christopher Stadium since 2016. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs drop to 19-11 overall behind a 13-6 record at home.
In the top of the first inning, Choboy blasted a solo homer to left field, his third of the season, to take a 1-0 advantage. After a scoreless second frame, Choboy laced an RBI single up the middle to build a 2-0 edge in the third. In the top of the fourth, junior
Case Kermode hit a double to center field with one out before sophomore
Lane McLean delivered an RBI single to left field, 3-0.
Following a rain delay, the Trojans added to the lead in the top of the sixth after Jeffries belted a two-run double to right-center, 5-0. The Bulldogs tallied a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the sixth to trail by a 5-1 margin. In the ninth, Wingate scored the final run of the contest on a solo homer to center field, 5-2.
Senior
Justin Koehler (3-0) earned the win after allowing zero runs on two hits with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched (43 pitches). Senior
Hayden Myrick tossed a pair of innings in relief while redshirt junior
Colbie Howell recorded one scoreless inning. Senior
Andrew Ledbetter closed out the final two innings with three strikeouts.
The Trojans will begin a three-game series in Conference Carolinas play on Friday, March 29, against Chowan with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
