MURFREESBORO, N.C. (March 20) – In the league opener on Wednesday afternoon, the Trojans cruised to a 7-0 victory over Chowan on the road in Conference Carolinas action while playing at the Rose Family Tennis Complex.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team improves to 4-5 overall behind a 1-0 mark in conference play. It marks the sixth straight win for the Trojans in the series, including the second 7-0 shutout. Meanwhile, Chowan drops to 1-6 this season with a 0-1 record in league action.
In the doubles session, the Trojans swept all three matches while receiving a default victory in the third position. Senior
Jessica Aylward and freshman
Valeria Guerrero battled to a 7-6 (7-3) win in the first doubles over Manuela Jimenez and Selene Kentish. In the second slot, the freshmen duo of
Simone Szovan and
Victoria Calle secured a 6-4 win versus Feidi Abreu-Rodriguez and Sreshta Puducheri.
UMO made short work of the Hawks in the singles portion of the contest after claiming all six matches. Freshman
Lara Stamereilers earned the victory in the first position by a score of 6-1, 6-1 over Abreu-Rodriguez before Guerrero posted a straight sets win against Jimenez by a 6-2, 6-0 margin in the second singles. Calle continued the success with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the third slot versus Kentish. Freshman
Sara Gajbhiye played in the fourth position and secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory while facing Puducheri. Sophomore
Alina Esser picked up an 8-0 win in the fifth slot over Elda Getachew, while UMO collected a default win in the sixth singles.
Mount Olive will quickly turn around to play Erskine tomorrow, Thursday, March 21, in a rematch of the league championship match, starting at 1 p.m.
