Trojans Claim Two Titles at the MU Women’s Fall Invite

FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team turned in a strong performance at the Methodist University Women's Fall Invite, highlighted by a pair of tournament titles and multiple deep runs across the singles and doubles flights.

Nina Bernier led the way for the Trojans, claiming the Flight No. 1 singles championship after defeating Madeleine Darud of Barton College, 6-1, 6-4, in the final. Bernier opened the tournament with a 7-5 victory over Barton's Aarni Yellu before advancing to the championship match. Calle added another strong performance in Flight No. 1 singles, winning the consolation championship. After falling to Barton's Madeleine Darud in the main quarterfinals, Calle bounced back with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Barton's Alejandra Carmona before blanking Barton's Claudia Zaratiegui, 6-0, 6-2, in the consolation final.

Mount Olive also dominated Flight No. 1 doubles, with Bernier and Yasmina Fatikhova capturing the tournament title. The duo opened with a 6-1 quarterfinal victory over Barton's Courtney-Kai Chin and J. Daniel-Joseph before defeating Barton's Madeleine Darud and Aarni Yellu, 6-2, in the semifinals. Bernier and Fatikhova then completed the run with a 6-0 win over their Mount Olive teammates Tamara Gavasheli and Victoria Calle in the championship match. Gavasheli and Calle advanced to the Flight No. 1 doubles final after cruising past Guilford's Carolina Dirk and Brooke Tsuei, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and defeating Barton's Alejandra Carmona and Claudia Zaratiegui, 6-2, in the semifinals.

Mount Olive also received strong performances throughout Flight No. 2 singles. Britta Buskqvist and Fatikhova each posted perfect 2-0 records in their respective group matches, while Gavasheli and Julie Jagiella also went undefeated in their Flight No. 2 group competition.

In Flight No. 3 singles, Courtney Howell finished seventh after defeating Pfeiffer's Laney Moore, 6-1, 6-2, in the seventh-place match.

Mount Olive continues its fall schedule at the next tournament on the 2026-27 slate in the ITA Fall Regionals from Oct. 16-19 in Sumter, S.C.
