MOUNT OLIVE (Feb. 3) – In the final exhibition ahead of the spring campaign, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program suffered a 7-0 loss versus Campbell, a Division I opponent, on Saturday afternoon at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Trojans are set to play their first official match against regional opponent Lenior-Rhyne on Saturday, Feb. 10 at home. Mount Olive, the two-time defending Conference Carolinas Tournament Champions, was picked third in the preseason league poll and features one of the youngest lineups in recent history.
Campbell secured the doubles point after winning all three matches against the Trojans. Freshmen
Lara Stamereilers and
Valeria Guerrero fell by a 6-4 margin in the first position to Eeva Ristola and Mialy Ranaivo. In the second session, senior
Jessica Aylward and freshman
Simone Szovan suffered a 6-1 loss to Mariana Ossa and Lily Chitambar. In the third slot, freshman
Victoria Calle and sophomore
Alina Esser were dealt a loss by a score of 6-2 against Veronika Prospalova and Lena Karlovcan.
The Fighting Camels sealed a 7-0 victory after claiming all six singles matches on Saturday. In the first singles, Stamereilers was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Ranaivo while Guerrero fell by a 6-2, 6-3 margin in the second position versus Ristola. Szovan competed in the third slot and was downed by a score of 6-2, 6-3 against Chitambar. In the fourth singles, Calle suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Tamsin Hart before Aylward fell by a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Ossa. In the sixth slot, freshman
Sara Gajbhiye was dealt a 6-3, 6-1 loss while facing Karlovcan.
The Trojans return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 10, to face Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference match at 2 p.m.
