Trojans suffer loss to Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-1

Gajbhiye earns win at No. 6 singles; Bears win five of the six singles matches

MOUNT OLIVE (Feb. 10) – In a southeast regional match, the Trojans suffered a 6-1 loss versus Lenoir-Rhyne in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program drops to 0-1 this season after facing a pair of Division I opponents in exhibition play earlier this month. Meanwhile, Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 3-0 overall with a 2-0 mark versus Conference Carolinas programs.

The Bears earned the doubles point after capturing victories in the second and third slots on Saturday. In the first doubles, freshmen Lara Stamereilers and Valeria Guerrero claimed a 7-6 (7-3) win against Runa Muderrisoglu and Claudia Orsini. Senior Jessica Aylward and freshman Simone Szovan suffered a 6-4 loss versus Nellie and Alicia Wahlberg in the second position before freshman Victoria Calle and sophomore Alina Esser fell by a 6-2 margin to Dawson Clifford and Alexa Allison at third doubles.

In singles play, Lenoir-Rhyne secured five of the six singles matches to earn a 6-1 victory. In the first slot, Stamereilers was dealt a 5-7, 1-6 loss by Muderrisoglu before Guerrero dropped a 4-6, 6-7 (6-8) match against Orsini in the second position. Szovan fell in straight sets by a score of 3-6, 0-6 to N. Wahlberg in the third singles while Calle fell 2-6, 4-6 to A. Wahlberg at the fourth slot. In the fifth position, Aylward dropped a 3-6, 1-6 decision to Allison. Freshman Sara Gajbhiye captured the only singles win at No. 6 by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) over Jessica Fuchs.

Mount Olive returns to non-conference play on Friday, Feb. 16, when it travels to Georgia to face Augusta, starting at 2 p.m.
