Victoria Calle collected critical victories in singles play, as the Trojans battled to a 4-3 win at Coker on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program secures its first win of the spring season and improves to 1-3 this season. The Trojans boast a perfect 4-0 record against the Cobras dating back to 2013. Meanwhile, Coker drops to 4-2 overall while holding a 1-2 mark versus Conference Carolinas foes.
Mount Olive captured the doubles point on Saturday afternoon winning two of the three matches before the event was suspended due to rain. In the first slot, Aylward and freshman
Valeria Guerrero claimed a 6-1 victory against Jade Bellegy and Emerson Banning before the freshmen duo of
Simone Szovan and Calle earned a 6-4 win versus Tamara Macias and Angelina Krieg in second doubles. In the third position, sophomore
Alina Esser and freshman
Lara Stamereilers fell by a 2-6 margin to Caroline Myers and Salome Sierra.
In the singles session, the Trojans split the matches with three victories to claim a hard-fought win in regional play. In the first singles, Stamereilers suffered a 6-7 (3-7), 3-6 loss to regionally-ranked Bellegy before Guerrero fell by a score of 5-7, 2-6 in the second slot against Sierra. In the third position, Calle answered back with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory versus Krieg, but Svozan fell in the fourth singles to Banning by a 4-6, 0-6 decision. Freshman
Sara Gajbhiye responded with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the fifth slot over Tamara Macias before Aylward delivered a 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-4 victory versus Myers.
The Trojans will be idle for the week before returning to the court on Sunday, March 3, to face West Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
