Women's Tennis outlasts WV Wesleyan, 4-3

MOUNT OLIVE (Mar. 3) – After claiming the doubles point and three singles matches, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program secured a 4-3 win against West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon in non-conference play.

With the win, the Trojans earned back-to-back wins to improve to 2-3 this season behind a 1-1 record at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center. The two teams met for a consecutive year, as the Trojans improved to 2-0 in the all-time series. Meanwhile, the Bobcats drop to 4-2 overall while going 1-2 against Conference Carolinas opponents.

In the doubles session, senior Jessica Aylward and freshman Valeria Guerrero suffered a 6-4 loss in the first position versus Dominique Van Vurren and Sneha Sundaraneedi. In the second doubles, the freshmen duo of Simone Szovan and Victoria Calle registered a dominant 6-0 win over Hailey Banda and Cayley Symons, while sophomore Alina Esser and freshman Lara Stamereilers posted a 6-3 victory in the third slot against Omolade Aderemi and Emily Lybarger.

Mount Olive collected three of six matches on Sunday afternoon to seal the 4-3 victory against the Bobcats. In the first singles, Stamereilers suffered a 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 2-6 loss to Van Vuuren before Guerrero rallied to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Aderemi in the second doubles. In the third position, Calle was dealt a 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 loss by Sundaraneedi before Svozan rebounded with a straight sets victory over Symons by a score of 7-5, 6-4 at fourth singles. In the fifth slot, freshman Sara Gajbhiye delivered another victory by a 6-0, 6-4 margin against Banda, while Aylward fell by a score of 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 0-1 (5-10).

Mount Olive is idle for the week before returning to the court on Sunday, March 10, for a pair of matches against Catawba and Emory & Henry in Salisbury, North Carolina.
