Women's Tennis drops match at Augusta, 4-3

Trojans claim three of the six singles matches; UMO returns to action tomorrow at Limestone

AUGUSTA, Ga. (Feb. 16) – Despite splitting the singles matches on Friday afternoon, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team fell by a narrow 4-3 margin at Augusta in non-conference action.

With the loss, the Trojans fall to 0-2 overall while playing their first road contest of the season. It marked the first meeting between the sides since 2018 with Augusta winning all three matches in the series. Meanwhile, the Jaguars improve to 3-2 this season while hosting all five matches at home.

Augusta captured the doubles point on Friday after winning two of the three matches. In the first slot, freshmen Lara Stamereilers and Valeria Guerrero were dealt a 5-7 loss against Andrea Gonzalez and Juliana Martinez. Senior Jessica Aylward and freshman Simone Szovan secured a 6-3 win in the second position over Madeline Frediani and Camilla Taborga. In the third doubles, freshmen Sara Gajbhiye and Victoria Calle fell by a 3-6 margin versus Priscilla Landi and Giovanna Patrocini.

The Trojan rally dropped in singles play with a split of the matches, as Augusta escaped with a 4-3 victory. In the first singles, Stamereilers captured a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win against Frediani before Guerrero suffered a narrow 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7) loss to Gonzalez in the second slot. Calle followed with a 3-6, 3-6 loss in the third position to Martinez, but Szovan responded with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 rally versus Landi in the fourth singles. In the fifth slot, Gajbhiye recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Taborga, but Aylward fell in the sixth position by a score of 4-6, 3-6 to Patrocinio.

The Trojans return to the court tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 17, at Limestone for non-conference action at 2 p.m.
