WILMINGTON, N.C. (Feb. 1) – In the opening match of the spring schedule, the Trojans fell by a 7-0 margin against UNCW in an exhibition contest on Thursday afternoon at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program will play another exhibition contest this weekend versus Campbell before a regional contest the following week against Lenoir-Rhyne. The Trojans were recently picked third in the preseason Conference Carolinas poll and feature seven freshmen on the roster.
The Seahawks claimed the doubles point after winning a pair of matches in the session. In the first position, freshmen
Lara Stamereilers and
Valeria Guerrero fell by a score of 6-4 against Elif Albayrak and Eda Arli. Senior
Jessica Aylward and freshman
Simone Szovan posted a 6-3 victory in the second slot over Gabbie Glickstein and Anna Parker Shumate. In the third doubles, freshmen
Sara Gajbhiye and
Victoria Calle suffered a 6-2 loss to Stela Joksimovic and Alicia Eberwein.
UNCW collected all six victories in singles action to complete the 7-0 win on Thursday. Stamereilers fell by a 6-4, 6-2 margin to Arli in the first slot and Guerrero suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Joksimovic in the second position. In the third singles, Calle was upended by a score of 6-1, 6-0 versus Albayrak while Szovan was defeated in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 by Katelyn Hubbard in the fourth slot. Aylward was downed by Lucia Gomez by a score of 6-0, 6-2 at the fifth position while Gajbhiye suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss versus Alex Borcich.
Mount Olive continues its spring exhibition contests on Saturday, Feb. 3, when it hosts Campbell at John Neal Walker Tennis Center, starting at 11 a.m.
