Yaneli Sanchez produced the game-winning goal in the 51st minute, as the University of Mount Olive women's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout win at Chowan on Tuesday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action.
With the win, the Trojans secure their fifth shutout victory and improve to 6-3-3 this season with a 5-3-1 record in league play. Mount Olive has produced a result in the last seven meetings versus Chowan, including five shutout wins. Meanwhile, the Hawks fall to 4-8-2 overall behind a 2-6-2 mark in conference action.
In the first half, Chowan registered a shot on goal in the opening seconds of the contest before Mount Olive countered with five shots and a corner kick in a 12-minute stretch. Senior goalkeeper
Samantha Gildner collected four saves in the final 27 minutes of the half, as the sides went into the break scoreless, 0-0.
The Hawks pressured the net with three shots in the initial minutes of the second half but were unable to find the first goal of the match. At the 50:12 mark, freshman
Rebecca Witkiewicz delivered a pass to Sanchez, who scored her sixth goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead. Both teams managed two shots the remainder of the half with the Trojans claiming a one-goal shutout.
Gildner earned the victory on Tuesday with six saves on 12 shots faced in 90 minutes of play.
The Trojans finished with a 13-12 edge in total shots while the Hawks held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Mount Olive continues the 2024 slate tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a non-conference match against Virginia State at Amon Field with kickoff set for 3 p.m.
