Mount Olive earns road win over Lander, 16-11

Hamilton records a career high of seven goals

GREENWOOD, S.C. (March 20) – In an early week road game, the University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team earned a 16-11 win over Lander on Monday afternoon in non-conference action.
 
With the win, the Trojans improve to 4-4 overall with their third-straight win. UMO moves to 2-0 after playing Lander for the second time in program history. Meanwhile, the Bearcats drop to 5-4 this season. 
 
 The Trojans were off to a quick start as senior Bria Hamilton scored off a pass from graduate student Meagan Maxwell, 1-0. Soon after, Hamilton scored another goal at the 12:49-mark of the game, 2-0. In response, the Bearcats scored back-to-back goals to tie the match 2-2. With complete control of the offense, Mount Olive went on a five-goal run. Led by sophomore Emery Kennedy, the Trojans were up by one, 3-2. Soon after, a pass by graduate student Margot Coomes led teammate Zoe Dougherty to another goal, 4-2. From behind the cage, Maxwell found graduate student, Ali Davis, to net the fifth goal of the game, 5-2. To complete the hat trick, graduate student Morgan Paige found open teammate, Hamilton, for a no-look goal to stretch the lead by four, 6-2. At the 1:39 mark, the Trojans found another scoring opportunity as Maxwell rounded the elbows to find Paige to bring the score 7-2. In the last eight seconds of the quarter, Lander was able to find the back of the cage to close the quarter, 7-3. Right off the draw, UMO saw another goal by Hamilton, scoring her fourth goal of the game, 8-3. With a goal by Lander at the 7:38-mark, the Bearcats cut the lead in half, 8-4. Just 17 seconds later, Davis scored her second goal of the game, 9-5. With a free position opportunity, LU was able to score closing the first half, 9-5. 
 
 At the start of the second half, Mount Olive was able to score the first goal of the quarter by netting the free position goal by Paige, 10-5. To cut the deficit by three, Lander scored back-to-back goals, 10-7. At the 7:48-mark, junior Logan Hibbard found Hamilton to put one past the keeper, 11-7. With 5:17 left to go in the third quarter, Hamilton scored a career-high, netting her sixth goal of the game, 12-7. With another goal by Davis, UMO closed the third quarter leading 13-7. In the last frame of the game, the Bearcats were able to score three goals in a row to bring the score to 13-10. With two minutes left of the match, Mount Olive was able to respond with three of their own goals. Led by Hamilton, scoring her seventh of the game, Paige, and Davis, 16-10. LU was able to score with nine seconds left of the game, but UMO was able to seal the win, 16-11.
 
Hamilton led the Trojans with seven goals, one assist, one ground ball, and a caused turnover. Fellow teammate Paige finished with three goals, two assists, and a caused turnover. 
 
The Trojans return to play as they take on Conference Carolinas rival Barton in Wilson, North Carolina on Thursday, March 23, at 5 p.m.
