Prots sets digs record; Mount Olive beats Barton, 3-2

Three Trojans record double-digit kills; UMO registers seventh-straight win over Barton

WILSON, N.C. (Oct. 20) – Senior Morgan Prots set the school record for career digs at UMO, as the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team captured a 3-2 victory at Barton on Friday night in Conference Carolinas play.

With the win, the Trojans secured their fourth-straight victory to improve to 16-7 overall behind a 10-2 league-action record. Mount Olive remains atop the KPI standings in the conference before playing two non-conference matches on Saturday in South Carolina. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs drops to 7-14 this season with a 3-9 mark in league play.

Prots has registered 1,637 digs in her four-year career with the Trojans and surpassed the previous record holder Mallory Peavler (2005-09), who tallied 1,621 digs. She currently ranks second in the Conference Carolinas with 377 digs this season while playing in 22 matches.

Junior Karoline Cox produced a career-high 16 kills on a .355 hitting percentage with four blocks (three solo), two aces, and four digs. Freshman Kaitlyn Landis recorded 13 kills and four digs, while junior Ashlyn Stone tallied 11 kills, seven digs, and two blocks on Friday. Senior Jenna Myer directed the offense with 28 assists, six digs, and one ace, while freshman Lyndsay Reid finished with 17 assists, 13 digs, and two service aces.

Prots led the defense with 16 digs while adding six assists and an ace. Senior Neza Pec delivered an excellent performance with 15 digs and sophomore Caroline Sheaffer totaled 14 digs in the win.

Barton established an early 8-5 lead to begin the first set before UMO scored eight unanswered points with three kills from Cox to take a 13-8 advantage. The Bulldogs responded with a block at the net, but the Trojans mounted a 12-2 run with a trio of kills from Stone to win the first set, 25-11.

In the second set, Mount Olive held an 8-7 advantage before the two sides traded with the following eight points. The Bulldogs scored back-to-back points to take a slight 13-12 lead, but UMO countered with an 8-3 rally, including two kills from Landis, to hold a 20-15 advantage. Barton managed to storm back and tie the match at 22-22 before Mount Olive delivered kills on three of the next four points to win the set, 25-23.

The Bulldogs built an early 12-8 lead in the third before five consecutive points put the Trojans ahead 13-12. Barton tallied three of the next four points to reclaim the lead 15-14 before the match was eventually tied at 20-20. The Bulldogs registered five of the next eight points to prevent the sweep with a 25-23 victory.

Barton took a 5-2 advantage in the fourth set, but Mount Olive countered with five straight points to hold a 7-5 lead. The Bulldogs used a short 4-1 rally to retake the advantage before building the lead to 18-14. The Trojans answered with back-to-back points before Barton closed out the set with a 7-1 run to take the match to a fifth set.

In the final set, UMO raced out to a 5-1 lead, but the Bulldogs responded with five consecutive points to hold a slight 6-5 advantage. Both teams exchanged points down the stretch before Cox tied it at 12-12 on a kill. Mount Olive scored three unanswered to complete the win and the series sweep, 15-12.

The Trojans return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 21, for a pair of matches against Lander and Augusta in Greenwood, South Carolina, with the first match set for 2:30 p.m.
