BELMONT, N.C. (Sept. 30) – The University of Mount Olive men's tennis program competed in the two-day Belmont Abbey Tournament and played in 20 matches versus four different teams.
The Trojans traveled six players to the tournament, including two upperclassmen, a sophomore and three freshmen. It marked the conclusion of tournament play for Mount Olive as it prepares for a dual match versus Charleston (WV) to close the fall campaign.
On Thursday, UMO faced Carson-Newman to begin the event and suffered a pair of 6-2 losses in doubles play. In singles play, senior
Adam Ibrahim fell by a 2-6, 1-6 margin to Gjordgjo Jankulovski in the first position. Fellow senior
Diego Ortega Cadahia was dealt a 1-6, 3-6 loss by Paul Gayk in the second slot. In the third position, freshman
Lenn Hoffmann battled to a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 win versus Yehor Opanasenko.
Later in the day, Mount Olive faced Belmont Abbey in five matches and fell in the opening two doubles contests. Freshman
Hampus Hagglund suffered a 6-4, 5-7, 7-10 loss to Andres Golindano in the first slot before fellow freshman
Kody Baker dropped a 4-6, 3-6 decision to Kai Lloveras in the second singles. In the third position, sophomore
Oliver Winterhagen fell in a three-set thriller 3-6, 7-6, 6-10 against Sullivan Monteith.
On Friday, the Trojans opened the day against Conference Carolinas foe Emmanuel and suffered consecutive losses in doubles by a 6-2 margin. In the first slot, Hagglund battled in a 7-6, 2-6, 2-10 loss versus Murilo Garcio. Ibrahim responded with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-2 victory over Henrique Castro in the second position before Winterhagen delivered a 6-3. 6-2 win against Alejandro Gomez in the third singles.
Mount Olive closed out the tournament with five matches against Lenoir-Rhyne. UMO split the doubles matches with the duo of Hoffmann and Hagglund claiming a 6-1 win over Zachary Cox and Connor Donley. In singles play, Hoffmann played in the first position and fell by a 2-6, 1-6 to Cox before Ortega Cadahia suffered a 2-6, 3-6 loss to Vadyn Rogynskyi in the second singles. In the third slot, Baker was dealt a 5-7, 3-6 defeat to Rufus Plane.
The Trojans are idle for three weeks before returning on Oct. 20, when they face Charleston (WV) in Wilson, North Carolina, starting at 2 p.m.
