UMO records sweep over Elizabeth City State, 3-0

Trojans total at least 10 aces for eighth-straight match; Mount Olive finish non-conference play with win

MOUNT OLIVE (Sept. 28) – The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team tallied double-digit kills in all three sets in a 3-0 sweep at Elizabeth City State on Wednesday night in non-conference action.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 10-7 this season and finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with 13 matches left in league play. Mount Olive have posted four-consecutive wins over the Elizabeth City State dating back to 2013. Meanwhile, the Vikings snap their seven-match winning streak and fall 10-7 overall.

Senior Amara Eziakonwa registered a game-high 13 kills on a .310 hitting percentage, marking the 10th time she has totaled double-digit kills this season. Senior Camryn Huber and sophomore Neza Pec each finished with seven kills, while sophomore Ashlyn Stone posted five kills against the Vikings. Seniors Jenna Myer and Madison Goodman guided the offense with 17 and 16 assists, respectively.

Pec led the defensive effort after tallying double-digit digs for the seventh match this year after delivering 12 on Wednesday night. Sophomore Morgan Prots finished with 10 digs, while freshman Sam Widleski recorded eight digs. The Trojans stretch their impressive stretch of double-digit service aces to eight-straight matches, led by Myer with four aces.

In the first set, the Trojans established a 1-0 advantage after the set featured four ties and three lead changes. Elizabeth City State held the lead a majority of the opening set at 15-10 before both sides exchanged the following seven points, 19-13. UMO countered with a 6-1 run to trim the deficit to 20-19 after a service aces from Prots. The Vikings scored three of the following four points before Mount Olive went on another 6-1 run behind four kills to take the first set, 26-24.

UMO extend the match lead to 2-0 in the second set with 13 kills on a .313 clip. Elizabeth City State took the lead at 13-10 before UMO answered by scoring six of the following eight points to take a 16-15 lead. Both teams traded the next six points before a 6-1 run by Mount Olive with two aces from Myer stretched the advantage, 23-18. The Vikings fought back by tallying five of the following six points, but the Trojans closed out the set with a kill by Stone, 25-23.

Mount Olive secured the match victory and the sweep in the third set after registering 17 kills. UMO established a 13-11 lead in the third set following three-consecutive points before tallying four of the following six points to extend the advantage, 17-13. Elizabeth City State closed the gap to 20-18 before both teams traded the next nine points. The Trojans sealed the victory on a kill by Pec, 25-22.

UMO returns to conference play on Saturday, Oct. 1, when it travels to face Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m.
