UMO cruises past Francis Marion, 5-1

Trojans feature four different goal scorers; Hill scores twice and leads the team with five goals this year

FLORENCE, S.C. (Sept. 21) – After scoring five unanswered goals on Wednesday afternoon, the Trojans collected a 5-1 victory at Francis Marion in Conference Carolinas play.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's soccer team secures its fourth-straight victory and improves to 5-3 this season behind a 3-0 record in conference action. The Trojans have outscored the Patriots 13-2 in their last two meetings. Meanwhile, Francis Marion drops to 1-5-2 overall with an 0-3-1 mark in league play.

The Patriots jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage at the 1:29-mark after a header by freshman Abbey Brosnihan floated over the hands of the goalkeeper. Mount Olive tied the match at 1-1 in the 7th minute after a through ball from senior defender Jaslyn Gott found sophomore forward Delia Allwood, who beat the keeper one-on-one. At the 28:00-mark, the Trojans were awarded a penalty kick, which senior midfielder Maelwenn Gaiffas converted for her second goal of the year to take a 2-1 lead.

In the second half, Gott delivered a free-kick from near midfield before sophomore forward Tianna Hill directed the ball into the right-side of the net to stretch the lead to 3-1 in the 57th minute. Nearly eight minutes later, UMO added to the advantage after sophomore Olivia Womack drove the ball to the end-line before finding teammate Emily Hein, who fired the ball into the top-left corner of the net in the 65th minute, 4-1. Mount Olive tallied an insurance goal at the 75:19-mark after Hill scored off a rebound, her team-leading fifth goal of the year, with an assist from senior midfielder Riley Baker, 5-1.

Senior goalkeeper Nicole Solicito claimed the win after recording two saves on seven shots faced in 90 minutes of action.

UMO finished the match with an 18-7 shot advantage, including a 12-3 edge in shots on goal, while also posting a 4-3 lead in corner kicks.

The Trojans return to play on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Southern Wesleyan for a league match, starting at 11 a.m.
