Oriana Izarra secured the A flight doubles title, while freshman
Lea Edelstein captured the C flight singles title on Sunday at the Palmetto Tennis Center Invitational.
Montserrat and Izarra entered play as the No. 3 seed in the top doubles flight and registered a 5-0 record, as the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team started the fall portion of its season. This weekend, Montserrat and Izarra earned a 6-2 victory in the quarterfinals before claiming another 6-2 win in the semifinals. In the finals, the duo would close out the competition with a 6-4 victory over Ariana Jativa and Hanna Vasconez of Erskine on Sunday.
Senior
Liza Voloshyna and junior
Nele Weber posted a pair of victories in doubles play on Friday in South Carolina before falling in the quarterfinals by a score of 4-6 against Jessica Binzari and Sydnee Foster of Coker.
In singles play, Izarra recorded two victories to advance to the semifinals in the top flight after a withdrawal in her opening match of the tournament. She would suffer a 4-6, 6-4, 2-10 loss to Binzari on Saturday. Montserrat advanced to the quarterfinals in A flight singles after two wins on Friday before a 3-6, 1-6 defeat versus top-seeded Alejandra Guerrero of Emmanuel.
Edelstein and freshman
Alina Esser both reach the finals in the C flight singles in their collegiate debuts with the program. Edelstein and Esser both won in straight sets in their opening three matches before meeting in the finals. Edelstein secured the win by a score of 2-6, 7-5, 10-4 to capture the individual title on Sunday.
UMO will continue the individual portion of its fall schedule next weekend at the Methodist Invitational on Sept. 16-19 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
