MOUNT OLIVE (Sept. 10) – After scoring three goals in the second half on Saturday afternoon, the University of Mount Olive women's soccer program claimed a 3-1 victory against Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas play at Amon Field.
With the win, the Trojans improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference action after playing their first home match since Aug. 25. Meanwhile, the Lions drop to 2-3-1 this season behind a 1-1 mark in league play after winning their conference opener against Erskine earlier this week.
Emmanuel would grab the early lead in the 12th minute after a free-kick into the box deflected off senior Viki Lederer into the back of the net, 1-0. Mount Olive shifted the pressure to its attacking side tallying three corner kicks and three shots over the next 10-plus minutes. In the final 15 minutes of the first half, the Trojans delivered three shots on goal with the Lion goalkeeper stopping all attempts to keep UMO scoreless. Emmanuel took a 1-0 lead into the break despite Mount Olive holding a 10-3 shot advantage.
In the second half, the Trojans wasted little time tying the match at 1-1 after freshman
Addison Dangler scored her first collegiate goal after floating the ball over the out-stretched hands of the goalkeeper at the 46:38-mark. UMO continued to control possession before senior
Maelwenn Gaiffas fired a shot into the back of the net off an assist from junior
Amanda McLeod, her second assist of the match, in the 56th minute, 2-1. Emmanuel would see a pair of chances to tie the contest sail high over the goal, while the Trojans maintained possession throughout the second half. In the final minute of the match, sophomore
Delia Allwood scored her team-leading third goal of the year on an assist from teammate
Tianna Hill at the 89:27-mark, 3-1
Senior goalkeeper
Nicole Solicito earned the win after facing five shots over 90 minutes of play.
The Trojans out-shot the Lions by a 17-5 margin, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal, while also posting a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Mount Olive returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when it hosts Newberry in non-conference play with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
