Mount Olive records shutout win versus Newberry, 1-0

Dangler scores in back-to-back matches; Solicito records first shutout of the season

MOUNT OLIVE (Sept. 14) – Freshman Addison Dangler delivered the game-winning goal in the 64th minute, as the Trojans claimed a 1-0 victory versus Newberry on Wednesday afternoon at Amon Field in non-conference play.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's soccer team improves to 3-3 this season and secured back-to-back wins for the first time in the 2022 campaign. Meanwhile, the Wolves drop to 1-4-1 overall and hold a 1-2 record against schools in the Conference Carolinas.

Newberry pressed the attacking side of the pitch early in the match registering a pair of shots, including a shot on goal that was saved off the line by freshman Sarah Brechlin. The Trojans countered with a pair of shots from sophomore Delia Allwood before UMO saw a shot sail high over the crossbar in the 22nd minute. The Wolves answered three more attempts over the final 15-plus minutes of the first half with senior goalkeeper Nicole Solicito collecting one save in that stretch.

In the second half, both teams exchanged shots in the opening six minutes before Newberry saw an attempt hit the woodwork in the 56th minute. Mount Olive was able to breakthrough at the 63:19-mark after Dangler secured a deflected shot and rolled it into the net at the far post to give UMO a 1-0 advantage. The Trojans controlled possession a majority of the second half and limited the Wolves to just two shots over the final 25 minutes of the contest.

Solicito secured her first shutout victory of the year and tallied two saves on 10 shots faced in 90 minutes of action.

Newberry finished the match with a 10-8 shot advantage and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks, while UMO held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Trojans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they face Erskine in league play at Amon Field, starting at 11 a.m.
