RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 10) – Behind a combined 30 service aces, the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team registered a pair of 3-0 victories against Goldey-Beacom and Virginia Union on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.
With the wins, the Trojans extend their winning streak to three-straight and improve to 6-5 overall after playing eight matches at neutral sites to start the year.
Against Goldey-Beacom (0-9) of the Coastal Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), Mount Olive posted a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-12, 25-19) behind 17 service aces, the most by the team in recent program history. Freshman
Kate Carter registered seven kills on a .600 hitting percentage and added five service aces, while senior
Camryn Huber also tallied seven kills on a .313 clip in the win. The offense was directed by the tandem of seniors
Jenna Myer and
Madison Goodman with 18 and 10 assists, respectively.
Freshman
Caroline Sheaffer finished with a game-high 12 digs and three service aces, while Huber and senior
Faith Herman both posted five digs against the Lightening. Huber controlled the net with five blocks and freshman
Lucy Hammock added three blocks in the win. The Trojans featured four different players with at least two aces, led by Carter and sophomore
Ashlyn Stone with five each.
Against Virginia Union (3-2) of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), UMO collected a 3-0 win (25-13, 25-15, 25-14) on Saturday totaling 13 aces against the Lady Panthers. Stone led all players with 10 kills on a .400 hitting percentage, while three players added six kills in the win. Goodman guided the offense with 15 assists, while Myer and Sheaffer notched eight and five assists, respectively.
Sheaffer led the defensive effort again with 14 digs and Stone posted eight digs in the match. Huber and sophomore
Karoline Cox tied with four blocks each, while Goodman and Herman delivered five and four aces, respectively, on Saturday.
The Trojans return to play on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when they travel to face Shaw in non-conference action, starting at 6 p.m.
