Mount Olive drops match at Shaw, 3-1

Trojans total 15 service aces in loss; UMO and Shaw split season series in pair of meetings

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 13) – Despite winning the opening set on Tuesday night, the Trojans suffered a 3-1 loss(25-18, 26-28, 20-25, 15-25) at Shaw in non-conference action at the Spaulding Gymnasium.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball program drops to 6-6 overall after facing Shaw for the second time this season. Meanwhile, the Lady Bears improve to 3-6 this year and snap a six-game losing streak to secure their first win in the month of September.

Senior Camryn Huber and sophomore Ashlyn Stone paced the team with eight kills in the match, while freshman Sam Widelski followed close behind with seven kills. Seniors Madison Goodman and Jenna Myer directed the offense with 20 and 18 assists, respectively, in the loss.

Freshman Caroline Sheaffer guided the defense with a game-high 18 digs, while Goodman and sophomore Neza Pec both registered eight digs against the Lady Bears. Mount Olive posted double-digit aces for the fourth time in five matches, led by senior Amara Eziakonwa with five followed by Sheaffer with four on Tuesday.

The Trojans took the early advantage with a 25-18 win in the opening set behind six services aces. Mount Olive established an early 6-2 advantage before Shaw answered with four-straight point to tie the match, 6-6. UMO countered with a 4-0 run with a pair of aces from Eziakonwa before Shaw once again tied the game at 13-13. The Trojans would tally eight of the next 12 points to extend the lead to 21-17 with Stone recording two kills during that stretch. Mount Olive recorded four of five points and closed out the set with an ace from senior Faith Herman, 25-18.

Shaw would tie the match in the second set after registering 18 kills on a .378 hitting percentage. UMO grabbed the initial advantage by a 9-4 margin before the Lady Bears scored four of the following five points to cut the deficit, 10-8. The Trojans continued to hold the lead as both teams exchanged points before a trio of kills by Shaw trimmed the advantage to 17-16. Mount Olive answered by totaling six of the next eight points to take a 23-18 lead before the Lady Bears rallied off three-consecutive points. The Trojans reached set point on a service error before Shaw countered with four-straight points to take its first lead of the second set, 25-24. Both sides traded the upcoming four points before the Lady Bears claimed the set on a kill, 28-26

UMO was held to a negative hitting percentage and totaled 10 attacking errors, as Shaw took the third set by a 25-20 margin. The match was tied 9-9 early in the set before the Lady Bears rallied off three-straight points. Both side exchanged the next 10 possessions before the Trojans tied the match at 17-17 following an attacking error by Shaw. The Lady Bears ultimately answered with an 8-3 run to win the set by a score of 25-20.

Shaw earned the match victory in the fourth set behind 13 kills on a .478 clip. The Lady Bears raced out to a 14-7 advantage before Mount Olive answered with three-consecutive kills and a service ace to trim the lead, 14-11. Shaw countered with a 3-0 run before both sides traded points over the next couple of possessions. UMO cut the deficit to 20-14 after a kill from Stone, but the Lady Bears used a 5-1 run to secure the win on Tuesday.

The Trojans return to play on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they open league action against Converse at Kornegay Arena, starting at 2 p.m.
