Mount Olive, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive baseball team dropped a midweek contest to No. 19 Newberry College 10-4 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Scarborough Field. UMO falls to 9-4 overall, while Newberry College improves to 15-3.
GAME INFORMATION
The Wolves of Newberry struck first in the opening frame. An RBI-single gave NC the lead until the bottom half. Alden Cottle doubled home the go a head run in the bottom of the first to give UMO their only lead of the day.
The Wolves did not allow the Trojan lead to stand as they pelted home four runs each in the next two innings to jump out to a 9-2 advantage.
The fifth inning had both teams exchange a run but Newberry held onto their 10-3 lead.
Gordon Pihl plated the final run of the game for UMO in the bottom of the ninth, but the Wolves lead was too great and UMO fell 10-4.
TROJAN LEADERS
Patierno led the team with four hits on the day and a run scored. Cole Newgaard (0-1) was pinned with the loss as he allowed three runs off two hits and struck out one.
ON DECK
The Mount Olive Trojans will remain remain at Scarborough Field as they open up Conference Carolinas play at home with a three-game series against Erskine College. First pitch Friday is set for 5 o.m.
