MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina - The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team defeated to Valkyries of Converse University 74-47 on Friday. This win takes the Trojans to 12-1 overall and 10-1 in Conference.
INSIDE THE SCORE
The first quarter saw the Trojans with the first two points 2-0 with 9:44 remaining. The two Conference Carolinas teams traded off the lead for the next few moments. After six tied scores the Trojans headed into the second quarter with a two-point lead 14-12.
Converse University took back their lead to open the second quarter 15-14 with 9:46 remaining. The Valkyries took a three-point lead with 8:07 remaining with two free-throws. Within the next 30 seconds UMO tied the contest at 17 with an and one from Makayla Kimble. Mount Olive took control of the first half earning a 13 point lead with 1:53 remaining. The Trojans closed out quarter number two with a 16 point lead 41-25.
Mount Olive came out of halftime with a layup from Azariah Fields increasing their lead to 18 43-25. The Trojan ladies never took off the pressure as they pulled ahead of the Valkyries by 20 with 4:02 remaining. Converse kept their fight and held the Trojans to a 21 point lead to close out the third quarter 57-36.
The final quarter of the contest was all Trojan basketball as they immediately increased their lead to 28 with 8:55 remaining. The Valkyries could not come with 20 of the Trojans for the remainder of the contest. Mount Olive took the 27 point victory 74-47.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Laila Harris led the Trojans with 14 points, three rebounds and six steals, while Ayonna Cotton took home 11 points.
VALKYRIES LEADERS
The Valkyries were led by Jordan Brown with 12 points.
