MURFREESBORO, North Carolina - The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team fell to the Hawks of Chowan University 70-68 on Wednesday. This loss takes the Trojans to 11-1 overall and 9-1 in Conference.
INSIDE THE SCORE
UMO started off the contest with an early 6-2 lead over the Hawks. The Trojans increased their lead to 10 with a jump shot from Haleigh Crews with 3:34 remaining in the first quarter. With 0:44 the Hawks decreased the Trojan lead to five 16-11. Mount Olive ended quarter number one with a seven point lead 20-13.
The Trojans took the first two points to open the second quarter. The dominating Chowan defense stopped UMO as the Hawks came within four points of Mount Olive 32-28. UMO took an eight point lead with 1:42. The Trojans went into halftime with a six point lead over the Hawks.
The start of the third quarter saw two Trojan points from Laila Harris to increase the UMO lead to eight 39-31. The Hawks answered back with an eight point run to tie the contest at 39. The Hawks took their second lead of the contest with 5:08 remaining in the third quarter 41-39. The Trojans did not back down as they tied the game and took back the lead with 3:34 remaining 43-41. Two Chowan free-throws tied the contest for the third time at 43. With 0:14 remaining in the third quarter the Hawks took an eight point lead.
UMO came out strong in the fourth quarter to come within three of the Hawks with 9:12 remaining 51-48. Chowan held off the Trojans as the Hawks increased their lead to six with 7:04 remaining. The Trojan offense tied the contest for the fourth time in the second half at 61 with 4:38 remaining. Chowan took a two-point lead with 1:26 remaining to put the pressure back on Mount Olive. Laila Harris cashed in a jump shot to tie the contest at 68. A missed Chowan layup led to an offense rebound and a Hawks last second layup to win the contest 70-68.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Laila Harris led the Trojans with 19 points, 12 rebounds and three assist, while Sherry Johnson took home 10 rebounds.
HAWKS LEADERS
The Hawks were led by Aniah Patterson with 19 points.
