No. 7 Mount Olive defeats Wingate on the road, 4-0

UMO stretch the winning streak to 11-straight; Lovejoy nets two goals in the victory

WINGATE, N.C. (Nov. 1) – Junior Alisia Lovejoy scored two goals on Tuesday afternoon, as the No. 7 Trojans earned a 4-0 shutout win at Wingate in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive field hockey team improves to 11-2 in division play with an 11-0 record in league action. UMO has now registered 11-straight wins and swept the series versus the Bulldogs behind their fourth shutout of the year. Meanwhile, Wingate drops to 1-15 overall and 1-10 in conference action. 

The Trojans took control of the game as Wingate saw no attempts within the opening minutes. After a shot taken by freshman Nikki Bos was saved, Lovejoy caught the rebound and scored the first goal of the game at the 13:57-mark, 1-0. Just over four minutes later, UMO gained an advantage from a penalty corner. At the 18:02-mark, sophomore Jinte Steenbeeke scored a goal, assisted by Bos to bring the score to 2-0. The Trojans closed the first half of the game with another goal, this time by senior Railyn King, assisted by freshman Jule Schuurman, 3-0. 

In the second half of the game, Mount Olive was able to find another goal-scoring opportunity when they were rewarded with their eighth penalty corner of the match. Off a pass by freshman Jente Ogterop, Lovejoy deflected the ball toward the back of the cage, sealing the win for UMO, 4-0. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Alanna Barrett earned the win and played nearly 54 minutes in the cage, while freshman Amanda Parr assisted in the complete game shutout on Tuesday.

The Trojans out-shot the Bulldogs 22-1, including a 14-0 lead on shots on goal. The Trojans also posted a 13-1 edge in penalty corners. 

UMO returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1:00 p.m. as they face Lander at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex in conference play.
