GAFFNEY, S.C. (Oct. 21) – Behind five different goal scorers on Friday night, the Trojans extended their winning streak to eight in a row after a 5-1 win at Limestone in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) action.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive field hockey team improves to 8-2 in division and 8-0 in conference play. Mount Olive continues to ride the longest win streak in program history after eclipsing the previous season high for wins earlier this week. Meanwhile, the Saints drop to 4-8 overall with a 3-5 mark in league action.
The Trojans wasted little time taking an early 1-0 lead after freshman
Nikki Bos scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year at the 3:36-mark of the first quarter. Just over three minutes later, Limestone tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by junior Josefina Golppi. The tied contest lasted briefly after freshman
Jule Schuurman delivered her third goal of the year just 65 second later to reclaim the lead at the 8:50-mark, 2-1.
In the second quarter, Bos forced the Limestone goalkeeper into a save in the opening minute to keep it a one-goal match. In the 26th minute, the Trojans stretched the advantage to 3-1 on a goal by sophomore
Sophia Frugoni, her second goal of the year. The Saints earned a penalty corner in the closing minutes, which resulted in a blocked shot, as UMO held a 3-1 lead at the break.
Mount Olive was awarded a penalty stroke at the 35:43-mark, and sophomore
Morgan Paterson delivered a strike into the back of the cage to extend the lead to 4-1. Fellow sophomore
Alanna Barrett registered a save in the 37th minute to preserve the advantage in the third quarter.
In the fourth, the Saints registered a pair of penalty corners and saw two shots blocked in the span of four minutes. UMO scored the final goal of the contest at the 55:44-mark after junior
Alisia Lovejoy scored her first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore
Jinte Steenbeeke, 5-1.
Barrett finished with one save on six shots attempted, including four in the second half, in 60 minutes of action at goalkeeper.
Mount Olive held an 11-6 shot advantage, including an 8-2 lead in shots on goal, while boasting a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.
The Trojans return to play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 22, when they face undefeated No. 6 nationally-ranked Converse in conference play, starting at 2 p.m.
