Mount Olive, NC: The UMO Men's Soccer team took down Belmont Abbey College 6-5 in a massive come from behind overtime victory Saturday night at Amon Field.
INSIDE THE SCORE:
Belmont Abbey (2-5-0, 1-2-0) got the scoring started with a goal in the 28th minute. The Trojans (5-3-0, 4-0-0) answered in the 42nd minute when
Glen Hernandez executed a penalty kick opportunity to tie the game at one.
Mount Olive had a defensive lap as an own goal gave BAC the 2-1 lead going into the break
The second half became a slug fest as the Crusaders scored twice in under a minute to extend their lead 4-1 in the 48th minute.
Alfie Pope responded for UMO scoring in the 52nd minute to decrease the deficit to two. Belmont Abbey, however, found another goal in the 60th minute to once again regain their three goal advantage 5-2.
In the 78th minute the Trojans had a chance to score again off their second penalty kick of the game, but it was not to be as the kick sailed right.
UMO picked up the intensity scoring three unanswered goals (Hernandez 82:23,
Ethan Willie 87:42,
Kevin Avila 88:30) in just over six minutes to tie the game at five and send the game into overtime.
As the first overtime ticked away the Trojans found the comeback golden goal.
Francisco Macedo struck for goal and found the inside far post. The ball was then deflected off the keeper and found the head of
Walter Gomez. Gomez's header sent the BAC keeper into the goal and the Trojans completed their comeback.
Mount Olive Leaders:
Walter Gomez secured the game-winner for UMO and added five shots on the night.
Glen Hernandez had an equally impressive night with two goals and an assist.
Belmont Abbey Leaders:
The Crusaders were led by Davis McBee with two scores.
Key Stat:
The Trojans down three, scored four unanswered goals for their highest scoring contest of the season.
