Mount Olive, N.C.-- The University of Mount Olive fell to the Braves of UNC Pembroke 3-0 in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday. This loss takes the Trojans to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in conference.
1st Set
UMO was underway to start their third conference matchup in a row as they took a 3-1 lead over the Braves from UNC Pembroke. A kill from Ashlyn Stone brought the Trojans up 4-2. The Braves had the momentum until they were stopped by a kill from Nafsika Papavasileiou. A kill from Starr Sergent brought the Trojans within one of UNC Pembroke 7-6. UMO battled back hard against the Braves taking three straight points with a kill from Ele'sia Williams. The Braves answered back with a four-point run until they were stopped with an error 20-16. With the pressure of game point for the Braves UMO brought home five-straight points 24-23. The Trojans were not able to catch the Braves, however, as they dropped set one 25-23.
2nd Set
Mount Olive started off slow in set two dropping three straight points to the Braves. A three point run from the Trojans tied the score at three with two kills from Ashlyn Stone, and one kill from Ele'sia Williams. The Trojans took the momentum with a kill from Starr Sergent 11-9. The Braves defense could not hold off UMO as they took another three point run with a kill from Amara Eziakonwa 15-12. UNC Pembroke answered back scoring eights out of the next nine points. Braves errors brought the Trojans back into the set 22-20. UMO was not able to hold them off as they drop set two 25-21.
3rd Set
The pressure was on for the Trojans as they were down two sets to none. UMO stepped up and took the first two points of the set with a kill from Ashlyn Stone. The Braves rallied off two points until they were stopped by Amara Eziakonwa with a kill. Two Starr Sergent kills brought the score to seven all until UNC Pembroke took two straight points. UMO and the Braves battled for points with the score tied up 17 all with a Trojan kill from Amara Eziakonwa. UMO took three straight points and the lead with two kills from Starr Sergent 20-19. The Braves battled to match point 24-21. Mount Olive was not finished yet as they took a four point run with a kill from Ashlyn Stone 25-24. Match point flipped between both teams three times until the Braves took home the set and the match 29-27.
Coaches Comments
"Progressively better, attack efficiency was up from yesterday and had we scored like that against our other conference opponents we'd have some different results but we're improving and it's exciting. Crowd was awesome today and we love the support! We'll continue to get better," said coach Emma Celentano.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Starr Sergent led the Trojans with 13 kills.
Jenna Myer had 23 assists and Morgan Prots had 19 digs.
BRAVES LEADERS
Morgan Gibbs led UNCP with 33 assists.
